Whether growing orchids, creating a container garden for a front entryway, learning about vernal ponds, or discovering the beauty of a community-supported-agriculture historic farm on Lake Michigan, these are just a sampling of our many local treasures that Art en Fleurs will be celebrating from July 14 through 16 at Boerner Botanical Gardens. One of the finest horticultural, floral arranging and photography exhibitions in the nation, Art en Fleurs is free and open to the public. Talented horticultural and conservation enthusiasts, flower designers, photographers, professionals and experts will be creating, lecturing and displaying informative exhibits, striking plant displays and floral arrangements, and breath-taking photographs in the Education and Visitor Center galleries at the gardens.
Members of the public can learn about bees and the vital role they play in all plant life, and visit an exhibit about Ephemeral/Vernal Ponds, the only breeding ground for important amphibians and micro and macro invertebrates, the sole food source for most freshwater fish. The public also can view a fascinating exhibit about the 119-acre historical Afterglow Farm in Port Washington built by Joseph and Ilma Uihlein along Lake Michigan. The property includes charming buildings, gardens, and ravines and is a Community Supported Agriculture farm providing vegetables, fruits and eggs for local subscribers during summer and fall months.
Initiated in 1983, and held every three years since, the innovative horticultural, photography and flower arrangements are evaluated by nationally accredited Garden Club of America (GCA) judges on the use of the basic principles and elements of art - color, line, form, texture, etc - which challenge every artist. Visitors can discover flower arrangements embodying underwater designs, functional table exhibits, and miniature landscapes; view horticultural displays of edible fruits, collections of cultivars grown by the same exhibitor, and wooden boxes covered with designs of growing plants; and ponder photographs of moving waters, close-ups of plant material and personally treasured places. The exhibits will stimulate visitors’ creativity and refresh their souls.
In addition to viewing the show entries and exhibits, there will be related demonstrations and seminars featuring renowned speakers.
