Attention preschoolers, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. Come and grow with us! These interactive programs are designed for little ones and include stories, a snack, sing-alongs and of course, a hands-on activity that relates to the theme of the program. What a wonderful way to introduce the concept of gardening to Growing Gardeners!

  • Growing Gardeners programs take place on either Monday or Saturdays at 10:30 am and last for one hour.
  • All scheduled activities below are available for Ages 3 – 5.
  • Cost: $12.50 per child for Members, $14.00 for Non-members
  • Classes are held in the Boerner Botanical Gardens Education and Visitor Center.
  • Class consists of a botanical theme, hands-on projects and a snack.
  • Most projects involve some “messy” work so children should wear clothing that is appropriate.
  • Classes are designed for adult(s) to participate with their child(ren), maximum 3.
  • Class sizes are limited. Registration is required. No refunds or substitutions.

Sugar & Spice & Everything Nice -
Tea Celebration

May – Saturday May 8 or Monday May 10
Did you know that the sugar, and spices we use for tea comes from plants! Join us for a sit down tea party complete with cups, saucers, fresh flowers, and some sugar and spice cookie treats.

A Tasty Garden
June - Saturday June 12 or Monday June 14
Do we ever eat plants? We sure do! Join us as we see what makes different gardens so delicious. We’ll have a healthy snack from the garden, and we will even plant our very own tasty garden to take home!

The Buds and the Bees
July - Saturday July 10 or Monday July 12
Discover why bees and flowers are such great friends! We will learn about pollination as we pretend to be bees and go on a flower hunt. Then we’ll pot some flowers to take home.

My Five Senses – Garden Walk
August - Saturday Aug 14 or Monday Aug 16
Why are plants smooth, rough or sticky? Why do some plants smell good while others have an unpleasant smell? What sorts of shapes are repeated in nature and why? Come explore the Gardens using your sense of smell, touch and sight.

The Secret Life of Seeds
September - Saturday Sept 11 or Monday Sept 13
Seeds come in all shapes and sizes, and each has a story of its own! Drop by to explore this wild and miraculous world. We'll learn how to collect and plant seeds, as well as how seeds travel on their own! Roll up your sleeves and join the fun while we sort seeds, and invent our own seed creations to take home

Fall Leaves Fall!
October - Saturday Oct 9 and Monday Oct 11
Jump into a pile of leafy activities at this class about all things leaves! How do leaves change color in the fall? Why do some leaves fall and some stay forever green? Learn why and how through hands-on experiments, games, and crafts. We'll join in leaf learning, leaf art, and a leaf hunt!

Oats, Peas, Beans, and Barley Grow –
Where does our Food Come From?

November – Saturday Nov 13 or Monday Nov 15
A farmer will visit with children to talk about where our food comes from and the important role that farmers have in growing and supplying the food we eat. Make a seed mosaic and enjoy a pumpkin muffin snack

Celebrate Winter Trees!
December - Saturday Dec 4 or Monday Dec 6
Come with us as we journey through the giant green world of winter evergreens. Soft and smooth, prickly and sharp! We'll find out what makes an evergreen - ever green, discover who lives in these amazing trees, and make a special pine cone craft.
